Gayner Engineers was responsible for the design of the mechanical and electrical systems for UCSF’s first building at their Mission Bay Campus. The facility houses research programs in structural and chemical biology and molecular, cell, and development biology. A 12,000 sq.ft. vivarium is located in the basement with a capacity of 6,000 cages of mice and other small mammals. A BSL-3 suite is part of the animal facility along with robotic cage dispensing system. The building also includes an outdoor amphitheater, auditorium, library, and bookstore. The mechanical system consists of high efficiency chillers, high pressure steam boilers, hydronic boilers, variable flow pumping systems, a VAV lab exhaust system, and an engineered smoke removal system. Ventilated cages are directly connected to room exhaust for animal holding rooms odor control.
